"Only in Canada" - Revelstoke BC

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

We left our home on Vancouver Island at 6 AM May 6th. We arrived in Kelowna and stayed at the Sperling Vineyards (a member of Harvest Hosts) for our first night. We had a lovely wine tasting of Pinot Gris and Marshall Foch, then settled in for the evening. The next day we drove to Revelstoke BC ...

Searching for Canadian meteorites is a bit like searching for Bigfoot - usually little or no chance of finding one. Canada is vastly spread out, with rugged mountains, or terrain heavily treed with numerous lakes. There are few deserts in Canada so the rainfall and snow will rust most meteorites fairly rapidly. As a result only about 70 meteorites found in Canada have been officially recognized.

On March 31,1965, a very bright exploding fireball was observed by many observers over this area. A few days later, 2 beaver fur trappers (!) working in the rugged mountains north of Revelstoke found several tiny pieces of meteorite in the snow on a small frozen lake. These were analyzed and the meteorite was determined to be a carbonaceous chondrite, a rare type. Only 1 gram of material exists ! No other pieces have ever been found ...

Onwards to Golden !
