Madoc, Ontario

1854

Canada’s largest iron meteorite at 168 kg, Madoc was found lying on the ground propping up a barn. It was acquired by William Logan. It was likely first found by a farmer ploughing a field, the exact location unknown.

Madoc was named for a legendary Welsh prince seafarer whom tradition claims travelled to North America in 1170.

Madoc was the halfway point for travellers between Toronto and Ottawa in the 19th century.
