On the Trail of the Great Canadian Meteorites
Mayerthorpe, Alberta
After visiting Whitecourt, we passed through the Town of Mayerthorpe and had a picnic dinner beside the field where it was first reported.
This 12.61 kg iron meteorite was found in Sept 1964. This one looks like everyone’s classic idea of a space rock with a metallic sheen and thumbprints.
A second specimen was found in 1964.
The nearby town gets its name from R. I. Mayer, the first postmaster, and Thorpe meaning a hamlet or village in Olde English.

This main mass of Mayerthorpe is at the University of Alberta meteorite collection in Edmonton.
