Slate Islands, Ontario

The Ear of the Wolf”

Just off the north east coast of Lake Superior, near Terrace Bay, lie the Slate Islands.

These are the uplifted peak remnants of the centre of an ancient impact crater.

The crater was estimated to be 32 km wide and 436 million years old.

On the islands, there are some shatter cones over 30 feet in size. Shatter cones are deformed formations of rock from an explosive impact. Breccias (fragments of rock from explosive forces) are also found.

The rivers were running at full force when we visited due to heavy rain. This is the Aguasabon River Gorge. The Slate Islands are in the distance.
